An initial trial period at the start of employment during which either party can end the relationship with shorter notice and fewer procedural requirements than normal.
## Probation Period
A probation period (probationary period, trial period) is an initial phase of employment where the employee's suitability is assessed. During this time, termination is typically easier for the employer.
### Duration by Country
| Country | Typical Duration |
|---------|------------------|
| Germany | 6 months (max, by law) |
| France | 2–4 months (renewable once) |
| UK | 3–6 months |
| Japan | 3–6 months |
| US | Not statutory (at-will) |
| Singapore | 3–6 months |
### During Probation
- Shorter notice period (often 2 weeks vs. 1–3 months).
- Simplified termination process.
- May have reduced benefits (in some jurisdictions).
- Regular performance check-ins.
### After Probation
Successful completion typically triggers: full notice period requirements, enhanced dismissal protections (especially in Europe), eligibility for additional benefits, and confirmation of permanent employment.
