The complete value of everything an employer provides to an employee, including base salary, bonuses, equity, benefits, retirement contributions, and perks.
## Total Compensation
Total compensation (TC) captures the full economic value of an employment relationship. It goes beyond cash pay to include equity awards, employer-paid insurance premiums, retirement matching, and other benefits.
### Components
```
TC = Base Salary + Bonus + Equity (RSUs/Options) + Benefits + Perks
```
| Category | Examples |
|----------|----------|
| Cash | Base, bonus, commission, signing bonus |
| Equity | RSUs, stock options, ESPP |
| Benefits | Health/dental/vision insurance, 401(k) match |
| Perks | Meals, gym, commuter benefits, tuition |
### Why It Matters
Comparing job offers on base salary alone is misleading. A $150,000 base with $50,000 in RSUs and a 6% 401(k) match is worth significantly more than a $160,000 base with no equity or retirement match.
### Regional Variations
- **US tech**: Equity can represent 20–60% of TC at companies like Google, Meta, and Amazon.
- **Europe**: Mandatory employer social contributions (up to 30–45% of gross) are a major TC component.
- **South Africa**: 'Cost to Company' (CTC) is the standard TC measure including all employer costs.
- **India**: CTC includes base, HRA, LTA, PF employer share, and gratuity.
