About
Net salary, also called take-home pay, is the amount that remains after income tax and mandatory social security contributions are deducted from gross pay. The gap between gross and net differs sharply across countries because each has its own tax rates, contribution rates, and bracket structure.
Most countries operate a progressive income tax, where successive portions of income are taxed at rising rates, so higher earners face a higher average, or effective, rate than lower earners. A few apply a flat rate to all wage income. Employee social security contributions are usually separate from income tax and fund pensions, public healthcare, and unemployment insurance; rates range from near zero in several Gulf states to roughly a fifth of gross pay in parts of continental Europe.
This calculator estimates the effective income tax rate from each country's top statutory rate and median wage, then adds the employee social security rate, to approximate net pay. It is a comparison tool rather than a filing tool: it does not model specific brackets, standard deductions, tax credits, regional or local taxes, or personal allowances, all of which affect an individual return.
